First of all I live in Richmond VA (outside of down town).

Tonight around 10:15pm I was sitting in my room with my macbook pro ironically enough looking at a P- 64 PPK Comparison article thanks to rjsixgun, (http://www.surplusrifle.com/shooting200 ... /index.asp) When I had heard 5-8 rounds go off pretty da*n close to my house! Close enough that i grabbed my gun sitting next to me on my bed and hit the floor and pulled the hammer back. This is the second time I have heard gun shots in the past 4 months!

About roughly two years ago, there were some people who were renting out a house directly across the street, who were obviously dealing drugs out of their house.
A lot of sketchy people going in and out of that house, I even saw them unload a small arsenal of handguns and riffles including an Ak, out of the trunk of their car.(Good thing I have a arsenal of my own ) One night I was watching TV in my living room when I heard multiple gun shot's. After the cop's arrived I went outside to check out what had happened, the car parked in front of the house on the street was full of bullet holes and I imagine the house was also. I guess it was a drive by shooting or something? No one was hurt during the shooting and I believe no arrests were made. (not 100% sure though) luckily they were later evicted from the house.

Recently I have been seeing a lot of "sur 13" Tags in the neighborhood. (Not sure if they are legit or wannabes.) They're Mexican gang originally formed in California. They definitely have no relation to the drug dealing scum across the street seeing as how they were black, and I had mentioned earlier "sur 13" is composed of Mexicans http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sur_13

You may ask why do i live in such a crappy environment?

Well the answer is, Im a college student at VCU (Sculpture Major) , and money is tight despite the so called "20 million" jobs created created by Obama's stimulus plan. According to Obama today on the 1 year anniversary.

Anyways I figured I would share this story with you, you never know when you may need a gun thats why I always have on hand my P-64 and also while at home my Mossberg 500 fully loaded.

I'm always glad to be armed. I recently got my bachelors and moved into a better neighborhood when i took a full time position. Trust me, I used to live in a lousy neighborhood.

I was in Norfolk in the navy back in the day.

My most recent glad to be armed times were dog encounters-- one i grabbed a broom to get rid of the dog and the other just left. Both times I had my pistol as an option but didn't need to use it. Nice to have an option.

I have a good story. Several (I mean several!!)years back,before we moved to Oregon, we lived on the Alabama Mississippi State line, I mean ON the line. Needless to say there were Deliverance beer joints all around and shady people and drunk people shooting at each other on a pretty regular basis. One day a somebody broke into our house and the local law enforcement would do nothing about it. This happened 4 or 5 times in the matter of 3 months.
One day I come home and the door is ajar. Scared s..tless, I get my .357 out of the car and go into the house. There sitting in the middle of my livingroom floor was this guy unwiring my TV. He turned and looked at my gun and said "dont shoot me please." I called the law, they actually came this time, arrested the guy and HE WAS CARRYING!! He neveer tried to reach for a gun or anything. The point is, if you are prepaired and use common sense, carrying can mean a big difference on the outcome of alot of situations.

I garee and I also believe that people who carry should go to a handgun safety course. I had to fire my pistole in sever different ways and the instructor preferred no one to use sights on the one I took. I spent $50 and I think it was worth it. (Learned all the weird laws) In Oregon if a person has a ccw he or she is not allowed to carry openly. Its in the books.

Over 20 years ago when I was in my early 20's I was doing laundry in a public laundromat. Guy comes in all wild eyed and I gave him the hard assed stare of the punk kid I was. He pulled a gun on me and threatened me. I had no gun but a knife. At one point he turned his back on me and let me tell you I turned into a calculating machine trying to access if I could kill him with my knife, and I mean for sure. I wanted to but I wasn't sure that I could pull it off.

That may sound weird but you do weird things in these situations-- or at least I did. I remember when he pointed the gun at me I knew there were some things I would do and some I wouldn't even though he definately had my attention.

As it turned out I told him I didn't want any trouble. He left. I told the attendant and he locked the door and called the police. The guy came back but couldn't get in. He left again.

The cops showed up and while we were talking with the cops a woman came in with blood streaming down the side of her head. Turns out he got in a fight with someone, got his ass kicked and then he came to the laundromat pissed off. He had his encounter with me then he went home, pistol whipped his wife, took the kids, and left the state.

Anyways, that is my one long story about being threatened with a gun. I think what I learned was that if what you did worked then you did the right thing. Another thing I learned is that I told the cops I wanted to press charges and be a witness, gave them all my contact info and they never contacted me. That tells me that a stranger can probably kill you and get away with it.

I do have a permit and I try to carry all the time.

I'm in Arizona where open carry is widely accepted, plus an Arizona CCW permit is easily obtained. Therefore, many Arizona Citizens always have a gun at hand.

My doctor said I should move to Arizona. I didn't think much of the idea at the time, but I may reconsider. Someday I will have to look up the crime rate.
