Qustion about P64

Howdy! Just have a couple of questions. Don't onw one of these. I was looking at a friends gun yesterday, then looking online, his was a little different than what I see for sale. His had the words Makarov Caliber on the slide. The ones I see for sale do not. Are there differences in these guns besides the stamping. I mean are they pretty much all the same? Just from comparing pictures I can see a few differnces, like the thumbrest on his grip, the one for sale doesn't. The red safety button looks larger on the one for sale. But mostly the difference in the grip.

this is one like he has with the Makarov on the left side of the slide..
Are there any more major differences? Thanks in advance for any info.

im new to the gun.
there are different markings on the gun depending on who imported it. The red safety dot on mine isnt as brightly colored as others ive seen. One big difference in some of the pistols is the hammer. Some are round shaped(mine is), some are triangle shaped. I've read that the triangle ones are easier to grip and pull back. I've also read that there is the letter "A" stamped on some of the pistols which means something in particular? As for the grips with the thumb rest, I dont know much about them either. I've mainly seen grips without the thumb rest.
I would like more information on different types as well.

Mostly just different stamps by importers and grips. I think the thumb rest grip is an import thing too. Earlier models have a round hammer like your second picture. Later models have a triangle shaped hammer. YOu can find more information on the P64 Resource page:

The triangle hammer P64s also have some minor modifications to the trigger group, sorry don't know the specifics. I read once that the "A" stamp meant that a gun had the trigger group updates installed at the factory. Unfortunately, I can't find the thread.

Thanks for the info. Are all variations dependable? And what about the Word Makarov on the slide? Why do some have that and some don't? On the source site it says
"The left side of the frame of a P-64 displays "Cal. Makarov" - a commonly used quote to sell the Polish guns as true Makarov's. Truth is, they're nothing like each other."
I know its not a Makarov but according to their statement they have that wording on the side. Just making sure the gun I am looking at is the same gun...
I just really liked his gun, and was hoping to find one just like it. I only find one source nline and thats J&G. SOG is offline for a while and their prices are higher. ANy other sources for these guns?

Round vs Triangle hammer is a preference. Some like the latest/greatest others like the older ones. I personally have a round hammer (Older) and I like it. I like the round hammer because less chance of snagging when carrying concealed. Don't think the trigger bar update make much difference but others may have different opinions. Original Pistols are marked 9mm P64 in quotes, some importers added the x18 and makarov bits. I assume this is to prevent confusion with 9m Nato more than anything. That could be ugly.
As far as sources, I got mine from J&G. Very happy with the gun and J&G in general. There are also a number of threads on peoples experience with J&G if you look around. I heard that Centerfire is out of p64s, SOG had them as of a week or so ago. IO Inc list them on their website as of today.
I've personally done business with J&G, SOG and Centerfire without issues.

good used condtion would be just that..I hope I am able to swing one soon. Thanks for all the help!

They say very good plus condition on their web site. Might want to give them a call to see how many they have left. I got mine about 3 months ago and it was like new. I don't think it was ever issued or shot.

I ordered mine Friday. Even though the flyer shows Hand select, it is no longer offered. They also said they are getting low on what they have, and as far as I can find, they are the only distributor left that has any.

I got mine from J&G abouta week ago and I can tell it was not fired before. great gun, just light holster wear towards the muzzle end

Well I just ordered one. Actually I had a friend buy me one, and I won't get it for a while. But it will be mine..lol.. I live in the middle of nowhere and no FFL dealers around close. He called and talked to J&G and they told him that they had about 1600 of these left. He said whoever said they were running low was told wrong. Anyway, I guess they have at least two, one for me and one for my friend.
Has anyone ever used ammo from academysports? I'm not sure what the brand name is yet, he said it was $10 a box. Steel casing, non corrosive but coated?? Not sure yet so I guess I will find out how it works..

glad to hear because I want to buy another 1-2 p 64s in the future.
I usually buy my ammo at Academy because they are the only ones in town besides Gander Mountain(which is a rip off).
It is probably the Monarch ammo which you are referring to. I love the stuff. I have only shot silver bear hollow points and the Monarch fmj out of my pistol. My gun shoots well with the Monarch, better than the silver bear. I also use the Monarch 7.62x39 for my WASR AK.
People complain about the Monarch, but my guns always seem to like it better than other types of ammo. My old SKS even shot better with Monarch. The ammo is made in Russia, so I guess it suites these type of guns well.

Thanks good to know. Thanks! I'm not even sure, is the Monarch 95 grain? Did you replace the recoil spring to accommodate?
I have been reading a lot here, and it looks like I might want to order some wolf springs. I guess I will hold off for a bit, and gather some more info. I see opinions vary a bit. If the DA pull is okay for me, that's fine, good safety feature IMO. This gun can be carried with the safety off can it not? Decocked and ready to fire DA? My Kel-Tec PF9 has a stiff trigger, it's DA only. I have no qualms carrying it in my pocket ready to go. It has no safety. Much like my Glock I carry for duty.

That was what I was told when I ordered mine. I wonder why if they have that many left, they do not offer "Handselect" any longer? They still show it on the flyer, but when I called and ordered mine they said they did not offer it any longer.
