my P-64 slide wasn't locking back when my magazine was empty so my local gunsmith took the magazine apart and cleaned it and it seems to work fine now. i was just wondering if i need to actually put any gun oil on it or on the spring inside the mag? or any other lubricant or anti-rust ? or just leave it perfectly clean???

I've always been taught that you NEVER oil a magazine, as oil and ammo aren't friends. I clean them by wiping them down with solvent on a cloth and then use a dry cloth to finish it up. Never had a problem.

You might want to try a LIGHT coat of silicone grease, which has no petroleum products. The most readily available/best quality should be found at Lowe's, Home Depot ..etc in the plumbing dept. with all the solders, fluxes and whatnot under the GUNK label for about $3.79 a small, flat plastic container. Remember, LIGHTLY, as grease attracts and holds dirt and all sorts of crud that was in your pocket and could get in your gun.

I use a mag brush to scrub out both the inside of the magazine and the mag well. They're available at many of the shooting supply outfits and come in different sizes, including 9mm. Brownells, e.g., sells them for $5.60 @

Well I agree with many of you here on the forum about cleaning pistol magazines. Oil and any greasy substances will adhere sand, dust, pocket lint, anything else that can gunk up a magazine or action. Dick is right one about oil and primers, they don't mix too well and will affect your ammunition. >:(
The mag brush is one good thing to get for your cleaning kit. Cheap and it is easier to swab out your magazines, or even parts of your slide if Q-tips are not available. We learned the hard way in the desert with our M9s, P228s and of course the biggest crud catcher, the M-16 and M-4 variants.
We used to use the sentry solutions Marine tuff cloths after totally dissassembly & cleaning of our weapons. Make sure they are clean, dry and then just rub all parts as the tuff cloth has a wet lube that dries on the metal. I have stored weapons in our military armoury just using the Marine tuff cloths after a good solid cleaning, and passed every arms inspection that we ever ran our sidearms and rifles thru. One excellent product.
As I live here in the south and it gets quite humid, I am a firm believer in total gun care and maintance. Hey my life is worth giving my weapon and it's magazine a good cleaning.
