I have a 1971 round hammer P-64. I have shot it a few times, but notice that the slide feels noticeably "gritty" and grinds when I pull it back to chamber a round. Can anyone tell me what I should look for that might be contributing to the gritty/grinding feel of the slide? I could also use some advice as to what to do to smooth it out. The slide snaps back normally... it just feels rough.

Maybe what you are feeling is the slide pulling back the hammer.

throw some lube where the slide makes contact with the frame. I usually do that after i'm done cleaning the thing and it seems to run fine.

After I sanitized the works with Gunscrubber I applied a little Lubriplate white grease on the rails and a few drops of Weapon Shield oil on some other spots. It is as smooth as butter in every respect now. So smooth that I can't believe they are nearly 39 years old! Then again, I am 42 years old and I cycle like butter too.

I would say the gun needs a good cleaning, especially soaking. I had a similar problem on a makarov I recently purchased but I use this also on my p64. nice and smooth now. use this link and the soaking recipe is at the bottom of the page.
