Yet another P-64 safety issue

I have a 1968 and have installed the Wolff 18# hammer spring, a new firing pin spring and a 20# recoil spring so the DA trigger pull and recoil are as good as they can get. I've read all the posts on safety issues and have followed all the recommendations: smoothed out and polished the tip of the detent giving it a nice slightly rounded tip, smoothed out the edges of the pockets on the safety with a fine stone point, tried all kinds of lubrication and it's still stiff with an additional glitch. Seems that at about the 7 o'clock position, just before the red dot, there's a secondary stop going either up or down. If I hold it up to my ear, I hear a faint click. This doesn't occur with the slide off, just when it's fully assembled. Seems that working the safety either way is a two step operation. I noticed some shiny spots on the disconnector, put some black marker on it, worked the safety several times, inspected it and found that they didn't reappear so that's not the issue. I don't have a clue as to where to look next. Any adult guidance at this point would be greatly appreciated.

Also, has anyone shortened the safety spring a bit to reduce the tension? Good idea, bad idea?

I cut my spring about two coils. I could not operate the safety until I did. Worked for me.

Thanks for the confirmation Bob. Just ordered the ultra heavy duty coil spring pack from gunsprings.com to experiment with so I don't bugger up the original.

I have never cut the safety coil, which I would think you are talking about the spring that pushes in on the detent. However I have pulled the detent and spring and cleaned up the grooves that the detent drops into when it is taken off or put on safety. Somehow trimming the safety spring is not the way to go. Pull the safety and you will see 2 grooves that look like cat eyes ..they sometimes get rough in the edges and I just take a very small drill bit and with my fingers twist it around and smooth these "cat eyes". Try that and see if it works for you. It should also move from safe to fire and back easier.
