Yeah, I love the P-64. You can put them where you want them, with plenty of pop!

Replacing the mainspring for lighter DA pull
I went to the range again night before last and had several more misfires on another box of Wolf amunition, but this time with a 19# spring; consequently, I just re-installed the original mainspring. I'm going to use the P64 as my primary CCW and I need absolute reliability.

I agree. I carry to protect my life & others, can't afford a misfire.
BTW, I have gotten so use to cocking the hammer that it has become second nature. Maybe carrying a 1911 for years helped because even with a 1911 cocked & locked, you still have to push off the safety catch.
Anyway, the P-64s are really drying up in this area. I have a second one ordered, just hope I get it.
And thanks for all the great help on this forum, I've learned a lot.

I am sorry, but, please leave those damn springs alone unless they break or stop working...

My dealer ordered one today from SOG, only place he could find one, and they said it only comes with one mag. But thats ok, buymilsurp.com has them for 20.00. (org). I went by the smokey Mt Knife works today and picked up four mag holders @ .50 ea. They were made for small knifes, but they fit the P-64 mags perfect.
If anyone needs any, I'll pick them up and mail them for 1.00 ea (that will cover gas/postage/time.

Did you call buymilsurp.com to see if they have mags? They have been listing them but did not actually have any for a good while. SOG did have them for $9.95 each + shipping.

grayfox,
The problem is most likely the Wolf ammo, not the springs. Hard primers. We have just a few die hards on this board that condemn the spring replacements, but probably 95% are happy with their spring changes.
Buy some other ammo, preferably 90-95 grain, which the pistol was designed for. There is no reason that a 17#, 18#, or 19# should not work, unless there is a bunch of gunk in your firing pin channel. Three of mine have 16# springs, and another has the 17#. Never had a problem with any of them.
JMHO (Just my humble opinion), Stan

I haven't had the need to change my springs, I like them the way they are ;D, and the more I shoot em the better the DA gets on mine, but that is me, and I don't and won't condemn those that do change the springs. We are all different, but for me, if it ain't broke, I don't fix it.

I did change to a 16# spring, and it hasn't caused me problems. But I don't know if that really solves things and I may go back to the original. Even with the lighter spring the trigger still feels sorta gritty and sorta tough, and the long military pull is of course not affected by the change in springs.

Has any one had a problem with the 14lb. springs creating issues with the magazines or the single action pull? I 'm going to order a set of springs, one 16lb. and one 14lb., I have never replaced (hammer) main-springs in the past, does it affect the single action pull as well?
My single action pull borders on almost to light and I'm afraid that the lighter spring may make it light for my reference.
Thanks in advance for the info. ........................G.R.

Well I went by to check on the P-64 at my dealers, he had gotten in two 1974s with flat grips. I grabbed them both. (one was missing the grip nut, but thats an easy fix.)

Gunney,
SSands and a few others tried the 14#, and as I recall, consensus was tha it really reduces the SA pull significantly , and is just too light.
Most who have been on this board for a while seem to prefer the 16# to 18# range, if they want a better DA trigger pull without compromising reliability. Any of these 3 will still reduce the SA pull slightly, though.
