Do grips need to be "fitted" to each gun?

Thanks to a forum brother, I now have a new set of grips to replace my cracked left side grip. However, I've encountered a problem putting them on.
With both the new grips in place, the screw isn't quite long enough. It barely comes to the top of the hole with none of the threads exposed.
If I use the new left side and my old right side (functional but not pretty), the screw fits properly. This tells me that it is the new right side that is a little thicker. Since I don't have access to a handy-dandy screw stretcher, it looks like I'm going to need to shave down the thickness a little. One alternative would be to drill a small recess around the screw hole (like the left side has).
Any thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated.
