I bought a couple P-64s and shot them both for the first time this last weekend. The 1971 model shot fine...no problems. The 1976 model however had a couple recurring issues.
Issue #1: Approximately 50% of the time, upon firing the last round the slide failed to lock in the open position. :-/
Issue #2: The clip FREQUENTLY would somehow manage to "unfasten itself" and would start to drop completely out of the P-64 as rounds are fired!!!!! WEIRD!!!!! ???
The 1971 model has a 16 pound hammer spring and the 1976 model has a 17 pound hammer spring. The hammer springs are the only modifications except for adding Dennis Marschal checkered grips. Help me???

Everyone does thier on thing on thier guns. I think the 17lb spring is causing your problem. This is one reason I keep my springs stock. You may want to order the new spring pack from wolf.

#1. make sure the slide bar is in right position and the slide bar spring is alright and you can pull up on the slide bar I think the manual show the position if not I'll post a picture later
#2. this why I always put nothing lighter than 18# hammer spring in mine
email me time , phone # and I'll call you

randalldshideler,
When I got my P-64 it had been given the light spring treatment already. Mine did exactly what yours did, it would often fail to lock back after last round and the magazine would often fall free, Also it would not fire a round in double action mode. I got a stock spring from a forum member and installed it and all problems were fixed. It is 100 % now.

It seems that there is some variation in the geometry/condition of the mag catch (or, now that I'm thinking about it, maybe it's the recoil springs) that makes some pistols more susceptible to the mag release problem with lighter mainsprings than other pistols.
Anyway, I would recommend that you either:
1. get a 19#PP spring for it (both of them, actually)
2. get a P64 mainspring calibration pack from Wolff and see which one you like
or
3. wait until we have some feedback on the springs from Wolff and then order P64 mainsprings based on that feedback.
I should be getting my springs from them tomorrow or the next day, so feedback shouldn't be long in coming.
Interesting to hear about the slide lock issue travelling with the mainspring too ... that one doesn't make any sense. I'm wondering if something may have gotten fixed while replacing the mainspring ??? ???

Duuuuuuuhhhhhhh ....
I'm willing to bet that you don't have a slide hold open problem at all ... I'm guessing that the slide didn't hold open BECAUSE the mag was dropping free. It IS the mag, afterall, that actuates the slide lock

... it's still early!

saands,
I'd say your right about the slide lock , on mine if I remember correctly, if the mag dropped out the slide did'nt lock back. One problem created the other.

Thanks again for everyone's help. I have 18 and 19 lb springs on hand so I believe I will install the 18 pounder in the 1971 model and the 19 lb spring in the 1976 model. I was not having problems with the 1971 model but the 16 lb spring I originally installed was too light for me!!!!!!
