Hey Bobby, nice looking M44. I have a M44 and a 91/30 that I was thinking about refinishing. Any tips/hints/directions before I start on mine?

Thanks, Cliff

The M44 was my first firearm, followed closely by a M91/30. The M44 is plenty loud. I get at least one can of ammo at each gun show, you can never have enough!

Right you are! One can never have enough ammo. I started with the 91/30 and just had to get an M44 the next week. If/when I buy ammo, I'll always pick up 440/880 of the x54R. Now, if I could only find a SVT40 I could afford!!! :D

Twodogs257,
You live in my neck of the woods, (east Tn). I agree on the ammo, get it while you can. When the ATF shut down the importing of parts kits, the same paperwork gives them the right to ban any military ammo from being imported. We are lucky so far that it hasn't happened. When I tell a non-shooter that I have 800 or so rounds, they think I,m crazy, but you can shoot up a LOT of ammo just having fun with friends. I guess they think a 20rd box is enough.

Hey Cliff, All I did was disassemble and sand like crazy. The finish on mine was starting to flake when held. It also started to weep after it got warm from shooting. I started with 60 grit paper, not to hard , then cycled down to 320grit. 00 steel wool in between stain and also between tung oil. It went really fast uptil the stain and tung oil parts, but you just have to let it dry. Have fun! I did.

I couldn't wait. I found some 60grit and went to it. Followed by 220grit. I'll put some before, during and after pics soon since I read you all like them pictures :o I'm thinking about either a dark walnut or a mahogany stain. I can't decide ???
