I have a feeling that if you sand the bakelite it will just keep a dull finish that looks like someone sanded it.. 8-)

Unless you don't care about keeping it original then maybe sand it smooth and if it doesn't polish up...paint it!

your probably right, I'll just give it a buff with a polishing wheel and see if that does anything, and if not, then it's not really a problem (I plan to use this as a general purpose knife while hiking and such so i'm just being nit picky)

I don't blame you at all. If you are going to keep it and use it...you want it to look nice! Post a picture when you get a chance. As a matter of fact I keep meaning to pull out what I think is an M1 bayonet just to see if Papabear et al can tell me something about it.

I hit it with a polishing wheel earlier today and it smoothed the rough spots nicely and put an ever so light polish on it, I'll take a pic a bit later and post it
