hollow point feed

Post by bzinggg »

I think that just a slight polishing on the lower-most edge at the beginning of the ramp is all that is needed. Actually, just shooting a couple of boxes of fmj will usually round it off enough that the HPs will feed fine. Don't polish the chamber at all, just clean it when it gets dirty, including the carbon where the mouth of the casing stops. But never with compound or any abrasive paper, ever.

bzingg, there is a pretty substantial lip on the ramp. I have fired about 300 rds of ball ammo through it. Ball ammo does real good. I keep my gun clean to the point it is an obsession. It is squicky clean when I go to the range and it fails to feed on the 3rd or 4th rnd. I know silver bear is not the cleanist ammo on the market but it ain't that either. I think I'm gonna mull this one over for a while and consider everyone's advise. Thanks a bunch guys thats a lot of info and all of it is good.

blinddog - On two of my Makarovs, that I've since sold to friends, I "improved" that lip with a round chain saw file. That only takes a few short strokes, and follow by polishing. You want to be carefull that you are only filing the sharp bottom angle of the ramp and don't let the file bump up into the chamber area.

For polishing the ramp, I've used a little Flitz metal polish applied to a bit of cloth wrapped around a pencil eraser. The whole process - filing the ramp angle and polishing - should only take 10 minutes.

bzinggg's warning not to polish the inside of the chamber is worth reading 5 or 10 times if you are considering that ... the cases expand upon firing and the friction between the case and the chamber walls is part of what retards the rearward motion of the slide. If you polish that, you will certainly aid the extraction of the cases ... but I've yet to see a P64 that doesn't throw cases into low orbit, so that isn't the goal here!

I would also go at this in stages of least impact to greatest impact ... Try just polishing the feed ramp first ... what do you have to lose? There is zero risk with that one ... If it works, GREAT! .. if not, then you can ponder your next step ... maybe softening that intersection between the first ramp and the second and repolishing the whole ramp ... if that works, GREAT!!! if not ... well it's back to pondering.

And if you slightly modify the feed ramp angle you won't have anything to lose either.

Well I broke out the ole drimmel and reduced the offending lip just a little then I polished the dickens out of the feed ramp (i could see myself, man I'm ugly when my face gets all scrooched up)there is just a little of the lip left but, like ya said"Its easier to take it off than put it back on". I sure do thank all of you guys for the help, all of it was good and really made me think.
