I actually handled a 1926 Nagant today at a gun shop in New Hampshire. Nice, different, I'm just not sure I get it. Even the shop owner couldn't understand why they had been developed.
I did get sort of a history lesson. He said the Russians contracted with Smith and Wesson for 30,000 of their top break revolvers in the late 1800's and then Nagant decided to develop his revolver and Russia adopted it. He claims that loss of business almost put S&W out of business and they sold their patents for the top break russian design to Colt. I'd love to have one of those right now. That is a gorgeous looking pistol!
My understanding is that Nagant designed the revolver (I think he may have filched the concept from Pieper, but I'm not sure on that) and tried to sell it to various European countries, but the Russians were the only ones to show interest--they were looking for something to replace the S&W that was a bit more modern, the "gas seal" design hooked 'em I guess...

Well if Comrad Nagant or whatever the title may have been back then got a ruble for everyone they made...he retired at a nice Dacha on the Baltic Sea with beautiful women feeding him caviar.
But then again we're talking Russia and the Czar at the time. Nagant probably felt it was his duty to serve the Czar and donated his design.
Who really knows??

I changed my mind, I have a new favorite revolver, this was my present from my wife on our 5th wedding anniversary this past Dec. I got it out tonight and wiped it down and I got that old warm fuzzy feeling all over again, and I almost started drooling........... ::) its a 1967 S&W M28-2 Highway Patrolman, pinned barrel, recessed cylinder, and the grips SN matches S277XXX. It shoots POA and and it handles full load .357's smoother than a baby's butt. Yelp, this is my favorite for the next few weeks.

Papabear,
You've got some terrific revolvers and this one is great as well. I love the old school wheel guns.

shot it for the first time a couple weeks ago, it was AWESOME! recoil was mild , it was pretty accurate and it left really big holes in the paper! Although it locks up well, I only shot it in single action just in case.
p.s. holding and firing large frame revolvers tends to make one feel kinda cocky, so give yourself a couple minutes to cool down after you shoot before you return to public.

redfestiva,
Understand what you are saying, however, when I first got on photobucket over two years ago, then all you could upload on their free site was 12 photo without signing up, to use more than 12 I had to delete one or more to upload photo's and more than 12 photo's you had to sign up, the cost was $25, I signed up on Feb 3, 2006 to their Pro account, I can keep it private as I don't care to share with the world, and I have a few other benefits besides. I think I now have over 330 photo's and just a few video's. I don't know what their SOP is now for the free account, but what you have sounds a lot better than what I had back then before I signed up for the Pro account.

Yeah, you can upload lots of images on Photobucket free now, but the full account is certainly worth it, especially considering video.
Here's a photobucket image of my favorite revolver, a S&W like yours, but Model 19-2:

bzinggg,
Nice, very nice........ ;D, the model 19 I believe is the first N frame .357 for S&W back in 1955. Your's is a excellent example, thanks for sharing.

Bzinggg...nice gun! :-/ :-/
I have a deep affection for model 19's, I learned to shoot using a 2 inch (1 and 3/4 or whatever it is) 30+ years ago and just loved it!
I always wanted one but have never made up my mind to save my pennies and search for a nice one. As the years have past I developed this love for semi-autos and only have 1 revolver. Maybe someday.
You have a beauty!
