I'm kinda new to handguns. I already have a shotgun, two rifles and I've shot friends' guns of many different types. But I didn't know anything about how pistols work until I got my p64 a week ago.
In order to carry the gun with a round chambered and safety on (of course), I can rack the slide with safety ON and it will chamber a round, correct? I notice the hammer decocks with safety on automatically. This WILL NOT cause the gun to fire correct? As long as the safety is on.
That is how I've interpreted the p64 manual I found on this website. Am I interpreting it correctly? The terminology is new to me.
I am going to the gun range ASAP to learn everything about this gun but until then I wanted this information so I don't accidentally shoot the floor of my house.

I know the gun will chamber a round with the safety on. I guess my question is, if I release the slide after racking it, it WILL NOT fire as long as safety is ON correct?

Can I.... Insert loaded magazine, rack slide with safety OFF, which leaves hammer back, and decock hammer by turning safety ON? Or will this decocking of the hammer cause the gun to fire?

Yes. The Safety is just that; a Safety/Firing Pin Block/De-Cocker. If the chamber is empty, and you load a full magazine, with the Safety on you can load a round and the Safety will automatically De-Dock the hammer. The same is true for if you are on fire/hammer back/loaded round, when you move the Safety to safe it will 1) Block the firing pin 2) De-Cock the hammer.
It won't hurt anything to check the function dry. You can also use snap caps.

Thanks for the information. You answered my question. I didn't know exactly what all the safety did....... Whether it just disconnected the trigger and decocked hammer only, or if it also blocked firing pin totally to prevent firing.....

After the dry-firing and snap caps suggest that you try all of this for your P-64 at the range with live ammo so you can be sure you function normally. I did this the first few times to have confidence in my P-64, good luck, you will really enjoy it.

If you field strip it and look under the slide and work the safety you will see that it fully blocks the firing pin when the safety is engaged.
