Smaller grips?

I recently acquired a P64 from JG Sales, and thanks to the great info on this board, have already successfully swapped out the main and recoil springs. My first post-modification trip to the range revealed three things:

• The double-action trigger pull is much better
• The single-action trigger pull is light and crisper, and
• the grips don't fit my small hands very well.

I think the problem with the grips comes from the lower part of the backstrap - it protrudes too far for comfort. I believe the grips could be easily reshaped to make them more comfortable. There seems to be plenty of room behind the mainspring.

So, has anyone modified grips to narrow the backstrap area? Anyone making these?

Tony, are you asking if anyone has taken steel off to make the grip as a whole, more narrow? or are you asking if anyone has tried to make thinner grips? I'm not a grip-maker, but it seems as if they are already as thin as they can get without breaking, but I'm sure those in the know will chime in.

D.F. I dont think radioicist is talking about the width, I think its the way the back of the grip fits in the palm of his crook of his hand.
Radioicist, there are only 2 after market grip makers for this gun that i know about. you can find them both on this sight. Zee, and marschalgrips. I think you can find them both in the buy, sell trade bord.

Yes, jhandy, you got it right - I'd like to shorten the distance from the front of the grip to the backstrap. It looks to me as though I could easily reduce this measurement by 1/8", perhaps a bit more, without affecting the operation of the mainspring. What got me thinking about this idea was a website I ran across that detailed a Glock grip reduction. Of course, working with polymer is a different animal, but I still think a grip reduction is possible, and it would fix the only complaint I have with the P-64.

having short fingers I've thought about this very idea! I'm guessing that you could free up a decent amount of space but you'll need to fit them carefully so as not to expose frame edges and impair comfort.

Tony, one of my friends, David Barnes owns VCD grips in Kansas City, MO. He does grip reductions, even does a stipple job on certain plastic grips. First he checks the underside if the grips to see if they are the right plastic to accept the polymer that he uses to build up the grips. I don't think you'd have a problem with reducing the front of the grip to the backstrap. Don't think he has tackeled a P-64 yet, but he is excellent with the Glocks and S & W polymer pistols.

He makes a super pair of "cratter effect" grips for both .45 pistols and the Beretta 92s. They really suck into your hand. If I could find a spare set of P-64 plastic grips I'd send them to see if he could work his magic on them. I have huge hands and the hogue hand all just does not do it for me. Sgt P.
