Even a blind pig finds an occasional acorn

Post by doyle »

This blind pig sumbled onto a juicy acorn today. My hunting partner has a friend that occasionally hunts with us. This guy owns a pawn shop and gives my hunting partner 1st shot at anything comming off pawn. He calls me last night and tells me I can have a Russian commercial Mak for $125. Heck yea I'll take it.

Today at lunch I went over to the pawn shop and picked it up. It's a decent but slightly dirty commercial 18A version with one mag. I was expecting to pay tax and NICS charge on top of what he had already told me. NO. It was only $125 out the door. For that price, I can afford to pick up an extra mag and maybe a Simpson-Suhl conversion safety.

I hear about pawn shop deals all the time would you believe that Massachsuetts laws prohibit (along with everything else that is fun) the loaning of money with a firearm as collateral...can't pawn a gun in Mass!! :'(

This state sucks, why don't I move? Oh yeah, I've spent too much money since I got my C&R... ::)

$125 for a Mak is just incredible! Great find. I have terrible luck with pawn shops. Seems like no matter which shop I drop by, it's always the same:

Overpriced beat up Mossberg 500's and 835's.

Overpriced and beat up remington 1100's.

Overpriecd new Charles Daly pistols.

Overpriced new Hi-Point pistols.

A couple of Savage .270's or 30-06's that some guy tries to convince me are better guns than Weatherbys and Sakos.

:(

Volfandan, this same pawn shop had just the type guns you listed for the same high prices. The only reason I got a sweet deal is the friend of a friend arrangement.

In talking with him while hunting, I got a picture of the kind of money they pay out. This pawnshop owner paid $50 for a like-new Savage muzzleloader (retails over $400). People bring him deals like this all the time - desparate for money.

That tells me that these pawn shops have LOTs of play room in their asking prices. If you find something you like that hasn't sold quickly, it does no harm to offer the owner a really lowball amount. Chances are anything you offer is still going to be more than they paid.

Thats a great buy for any Russian commercial Mak, congtrats on your purchase. Is it a IMEZ or a BAIKAL?

It looks to be an IMEZ manufacture but it also bears a BAIKAL import mark.

Russian commercial Maks were made by IMEZ, formerly known as Izhevsk. BAIKAL was a distribution company.
