Trigger stopped working?

Post by uneven »

???

Hello all,

Just purchased my P64 and didnt even fire 20 rounds in it when the trigger just stopped working. Became extremely loose, just swings back and forth loosly, safety switch doesn't affect it one way or another...

Any advice on what to do - the only gunsmith in my neighborhood isnt familiar with P64's and said he'd get back to me on what is wrong.

And in case it matters, I was firing Winchester 9X18 Makarov ammo.

Uneven - If there is no tension on your trigger at all then you may have busted your trigger return spring. If you do have some tension (trigger moves forward on its own) then you may be having trouble with the safety. I'm having similar problems, although not as severe as yours. Mine is intermittent. If your gunsmith is worth his salt, he should be able to figure the P-64 out in no time. Pretty simple inside; not a lot going on...

I agree with Norm. He can sell you a new trigger return spring and walk you through the installation process.
You could try holding the pistol up side down and manually pushing the trigger all the way forward. Then, while holding it in the same position see if the trigger has tension as you pull it back.
I was not "familiar" with the P-64 either, but I detailed stripped it and got it all back together.
BTW, I ran across a "new" P-64 at a gun show that had a very smooth and light trigger pull in double action. Of course, I don't know it it would have developed a light strike problem.

I had the same thing happen to me. It turned out that the trigger return spring broke. Got one from Norm and the instructions and was back in business in about 45 min.

Uneven,

It's definitely a busted trigger return spring. Like so many others I had it happen but with less rounds fired...lol. Norm got me back up and running with a set of his springs. With no experience, it took me all of 30 minutes to swap them out with the detailed instructions with photo's that he included. Got 500+ rounds on mine now with no issues. Also, if you haven't changed out your hammer spring yet, this would be a good time to do it as well. It makes the trigger pull much nicer. Pick up one of the Wolfe brand ones.

snaggr ,
Glad you got your P-64 back on the road. Norm has helped many folks doctor their P-64's including myself. I once had my P-64 locked up so tight I thought I'd need dinamite to separate the slide from the frame but after a phone call to Norm I literally was ready to shoot again in 5 minutes.

Thanks Red. Yeah, I was one frustrated dude when my spring broke. I had purchased my 64 at one of the many Crossroads of The West gun shows here in Phoenix about 2 weeks prior. I had gotten 1K rounds of ammo from AIM Surplus and was just itching to punch some holes in paper at the range. Turns out I got exactly 7 rounds out of the barrel when the spring broke. Fortunately I never take only one firearm to the range so the whole day wasn't a waste. When I got home I jumped on the 'net and came across this forum. Super Dude Norm wasted no time in replying to my inquiry as to the problem and within 10 days I had a set of his springs including a freebie slide stop one to swap out. I can say from experience his customer service is better than ANY that I know of. If it weren't for him I'd probably be using my 64 for a book end by now...lol!
