Got My First USA Pistol

Post by manicmechanic »

First pistol was the Croatian Sensation, XD40 in 05, followed by a gently used 1986 Sig P220 out of W. Germany, closely followed by a 1980 Belgian Browning High Power. Then came the mother country's two Radom p-64's, one is a 1974 and the other is mostly a 72 with a 75 slide. Then a 1982 Bulgarian Makarov in 9x18, quickly chased by the 2007 Ruger MKIII 22/45. Feels good to finally have an American in the hand. Picked it up on the first day of Sportsmens Warehouse's business day in Michigan. I was the first gun purchaser of it's hopefully long home stand. Mostly bought it for my 19,14, and 12 year old children to get used to the fine art of pistol shooting, which I can only say I'm slowly getting better. I'm hoping to improve with using this fine looking pistol also! It will be at least a day before I get a chance to let the kids break it in so. BTW any recommended ammo to stay away from, and or stay with?

You should do fine with your new Ruger. I've acquired 3 over the last 25 years, all MKII models, one a 22/45. All are 5,5" bull barrels. They have worked very well over the years. I can't think of any ammo I've tried that caused any issues. Typically the Federal bulk pack from Wallyworld works great.
I wore out an extractor after 25 years and no telling how many bricks of ammo. The gun would stove pipe or failed to eject at all.
Ten minutes and $1.29 later, the new extractor did the job.
I prefer the MKII over the MKIII as the magazine safety of the MKIII makes takedown and reassembly a pain. The MKIII also has the loaded chamber indicator. The 22/45 variation has the 1911 type magazine release.
Enjoy your new Ruger. It will serve you, your kids and your grandkids well.

Well ran into a slight problem with the new Ruger, but everything looks like it will work out. Here's a link from a Ruger forum I'm also addicted too now, lol. :-/

Well, after a little over a month being gone back to the Arizona retreat,(Rugers repair facility), the 22/45 is back home and raring to go. I can't wait to take the kids out, and hopefully my wife will join in on the fun, down to the range and fire some more break-in rounds thru her. According to the paperwork, they ended up replacing the grip frame and the hammer pivot pin. She came back all wet and shiny.
I even let the wife know about this one now. She was good with it. It looks like I'm going to put it under the tree for everyone, not sure how or who it'll be from, but I'll figure out something or someone. I'm really hoping I can get my wife to at least shoot this one and eventually move up into at least the XD or Sig in 9mm. Miracles do happen, just like on Christmas Eve!!
