Remember I wanted a...

It looks like I just bought a project gun.

I have this facination with the French Mas 36...goodness knows why but I do. I see them out there for anywhere from $200 to $700 depending on condition and source.

I just mailed payment ($70) for a "very good condition" MAS 36 that appears to have been sporterized...translation...Bubba Got To It!

The front stock has been changed/cut etc., no bayonet. I do not have a picture but it supposed to look like this...

Now for about another $50-$60 at numrichs I figure if in stock I can make it back into this...

Like I said, a project, fun stuff resulting in what I wanted and at a really good price...I hope. Someone remind me of this thread when I eventually post before and after pictures.

First I need to get it, clean it, shoot it and then create a wish list of parts (hand guard, front stock, bayonet, stock rings) and I have a project that will help me fulfill a desire (that French half of me wanted a piece of our proud military heritage, so I figure a rifle that might have been dropped upon retreat and probably never fired in anger is a good one, ::))

Pictures of the real thing, if I'm not too embarassed to post them, next week when I get it.

Bubba or not....I actually think it looks really cool! It'd make a great boat or truck gun!

I just spent almost as much ordering 100 rounds of ammo as I did buying the rifle!

I've been pricing parts and I figure without any "incidents" I can rebuild it to original for less than $80 so $150 MAS 36 that I built...sort of...will male me happy.

I can't wait to get it and play. I may just give a list of the parts order better yet order them and let my kids or my wife give them to me for the holidays!!

The only issue that I've identified is that the barrel was cut 2 inches. As you can see in the Bubba pics the front sight is an inch or so from the barrel end. The original MAS36 has 3 inches of barrel extending past the sight. Maybe I won't put a bayonet on it...just the fore end and handguard. I'll have to wait and see what "mine" really looks like. Mine may look like an Enfield with a silly bolt as opposed to a MAS !! ::)

be sure to post pics when you get her finished. I think she'll turn out incredible....and you're right about $150 MAS. Heck, sometimes projects end up being more $$ than just forking out a higher amount of $$ up front to begin with. Your deal, on the other hand, seems outstanding.

Seems is an awful big little word...it seems liek a good deal, we'll see. But I don't care because it is like anjdrifter said in an earlier post, I am like a little kid...I can't wait to get this thing and "hopefully" it is as described and I can PLAY. :-/

I just am happy I am scratching this silly MAS itch. Now how to be sure I'm home to take delivery instead of my wife having to sign for it... :'(
