Oh, on a realated note (you may already know this but It's worth telling for those who don't) with the Mosin M44, the gun was zeroed with the bayonet extended, so it needs to be fired that way or your zero will be off.

Here are my two Mosin Nagants:
Top is a 1943 M91/30, Bottom is a 1946 M44, the 91/30 is more accurate but the M44 is louder ;D

Thanks NORM,
Some very good information at both of those sites. I guess I have my work cut out for me no matter how I go about the project. You had mentioned paint thinner and soap and watter, how long do you soak the parts before you start to clean them?
Gunney Rabbit.

Mine is an odd one, I tried my M44 with the bayonet extended and retracted. No difference, it shoots a bit to the left either way.

GR
paint stripper on the wood not paint thinner
paint thinner or diesel fuel on metal parts , I have had to soak parts as long as over night , go to auto parts store get a 1 or 2 spray cans of the cheapest brake cleaner , then I use WD 40 on them , then wipe them down with oil.
that's what works for me
I have use paint stripper on metal parts too ,in some cases
I also use a ultrasonic cleaner filled with paint thinner for small parts or any thing that will fit in it( it about an hour)
I also a fine wire wheel in my red wing to buff metal parts if need be
don't get paint stripper on you it will burn you
