New grips for my P 64

Post by xairman »

Thank you very much for starting this much needed forum. I have owned my P 64 for about 3 months and love it. It is very easy to carry and very reliable. I do a little wood working as a hobby and thought (because there is virtually no aftermarket grips) I would make my own wood grips. The wood is cherry and the finish is Birchwood Caseys Tru Oil. It took me about 14 hours to make them, most of the work in the inletting. Just thought I would share a picture with you. ;D

Wow!! beautiful job Larry. Grips as well as all other parts for the P64 are a problem. Maybe this board will turn up some creative solutions to a bunch of parts. thanks for the pix.

Raypol, thanks for the comments. I think so far the P 64 is getting a bad rap. I think the fit and finish is just as good (if not better) than allot of other mil surplus guns. Mine has been 100% reliable and I carry it often. My G26 is my primary carry gun, but sometimes the P64 is more appropriate. Once the "It's not a makarov" stigma wears off and more people realize what a value these guns are, purchases will increase and a lot more aftermarket parts will become available. :D I own a bulgie makarov and CZ52 and have made my own unscientific comparisons.

xairman, great looking grips - I know quite a few folks would like to get their hands on a set. If you are interested in making and selling them, name your price, give me pics and contact info and I'll put it on the website. Great job!

Man does those grips make the P64 a(if I may say) a pretty thing. I also hope there is a aftermarket for those. Thanks for the pictures Larry.

Grea job, but I don't have that talent. For those like me, the Hogue Co. tells me that their Hogue Handall Jr, # 18,000, will fit the P-64. Midsouth shooter supply sells it for about $ 6. This pull-on rubber sleeve might alleviate the slide pinch. Gonna try it. Midsouth # is 800-272-3000.

Great job xairman!! Wish I was as talented.

Something I've tried might be of interest here. I like a little more "tackiness" on my grips and have destroyed Hogue slip-ons trying to get them on. Then one day while looking about the basement I spied an old mountain bike inner tube. I cut it to fit. Turned it inside out and wiped off the powdery residue and slipped it on the grip of my Bulgie Mak. Feels just right. No bulk, but a little better feel. Now all my pistols wear this mod. By the way the tube in question is for a 1.9 to 2.1 mountain bike tire. One tube will cost you $2 maybe $3 at the most and you'll get many "tacky grip slip covers". Just thought I'd share that with ya'll.

I wish some company would produce a really good set of walnut grips with checkering in the style of the Walther PPK grips I have seen.
