The Poles are also in the Middle East. I saw one of my other website's gunboards.com that the new Pistol in .9mm the WIST-94 is having all kind's of Problem's so much the Troop's dont want to carry it. Sights,Mag. Floor Plate Breaks, Wobble in Slide, Trigger Breaking. I wonder if they are going to go back to the P.83 in the meantime? I am glad I just got my 1989 P.83 from AIM they may dry up if the Poles dont import any more. However I am told by P.W. Arms they just got a new Batch, and he say's these are the best he has seen, so far!. Paul

Too bad, the WIST-94 is an interesting looking pistol. Manual (in Polish text but excellent pics and schematics) is @ http://www.prexer.com.pl/WIST-94Instrukcja.pdf

Agreed, hopefully this won't shut down the supply of P-83s. On the flip side we may get an opportunity to pick up a WIST-94 sooner than expected. :D

What's the benefit of owning a P83 over the CZ82, P64, Feg PA63/ R61,etc; or any Makarov pistole? I really want to buy one but I can't rationalize the purchase with out a good reason.
Are they lighter, are they more accurate, are they made better?

The P.83 is the best looking of all Makarov Caliber Pistols sort of like a Glock in the Front and Mauser HSC with P.38 Style Grip's. Fired my 1989 P.83 yesterday, it performed flawless, except for tight Magazine Spring.

Aesthetic preferences aside, what are the benefits of the pistol? Is it built better than the P64, how much does the gun weigh and what are the length and width of the pistol; is it more accurate than other 9x18 pistoles? If it is shorter, thinner, lighter or more accurate than the other optiones then I would have a reason to buy. I also question the superiorty of stamped sheet metal parts as compared to machined bar stock metal parts, just like aesthetics, a personal preference in my opinion. I really want to be convinced because we all know you can't have too many guns.
Please convince me!

Having only fired a P.64 once, it was a Friends, I can say the P.83 is like the Makarov, does not hurt my hand like a Walther PPK, a lot of these small Pistol's with large Calibers that dont have a Back Strap on the Frame can kick recoil wise. by far better than the P.64 and basicly the same a Makarov, or Walther PPK/S. I noticed also the Pistol was more Accurate than the PPK/S and Makarovs I have fired in the past.

Ugh. That Wist-94 is fugly. In fact, it's so ugly merely taking it out of it's holster should be enough to run someone off.

As for the P83, I don't get the appeal either.

gunnyrabbit,
The P-83 is lighter than the Mak or the CZ 82. The safety works by pressing down. The magazines are similar to the Mak, but the sharp edge folds under a bump in the magazine when you insert round 8. It is a slightly improved Mak, if you can get beyond the looks. Still, the CZ 82 is a much nicer pistol, higher capacity, and cheaper. I bought mine to sort of complete the 9x18 collection. If you need an excuse, that is as good as any.

I just wanted to chime in with my two cents, for what it's worth.

I have a PA63, a P64, a CZ82 and a P83. They're all outstanding firearms but I think the best of the bunch is the CZ based on price, accuracy and mag capacity. But since getting the P83 about six weeks ago, I find myself carrying it often. It's less bulky in the grip area than the CZ and carries more rounds than the PA63 or P64. For me it's a good compromise.

Plus it has a wow factor because a lot of people who're familiar with ComBloc stuff haven't seen one in the flesh. It's not my G21, but it's a lot easier to conceal in the summertime.

hp-hobo, I'm curious, you say the P83 has a slimmer grip profile than the CZ 82, is it measureable or is it just the way the gun feels in your hand? I love my CZ 82 but the grip is quite bulky for me and I don't shoot it as well as I do single stack pistoles. I had to change the grips on of my 1911 pistoles to wood from rubber just for that reason. I'de be interested in what the difference in width is from your CZ 82, I know it didn't take much for the my 1911's, just a matter of several millimeters to make the difference. I'll measure them both and post the results this weekend. I'll also try to include a side by side pic or two.

Well, I took some pictures of them side by side, but due to my amatuer photographic skills they won't show you anything worthwhile.

The slide/barrel length is almost the same, the CZ-82 being a mm or two longer. The slide width again is almost the same, this time the the P-83 being wider by about one mm. Functionally neither of those measurements matter for this exercise.

On to grip size. Due to being a double stack, the CZ-82 is wider at 35mm versus 31. But the P-83 is larger measured from the frontstrap to backstrap at 55mm versus 51mm. When held in my hand, my fingers wrap to the same point on both of them, so overall size is about the same but the shape is somewhat different. Loaded weight is so close that you'd need a postal scale to differentiate between them.

All that being said, the CZ-82 loses the IWB comfort contest because it's not only wider which leaves less room in your drawers, but the slide lock and safety also have sharp edges whereas the slide lock and decocker on the P-83 are nicely rounded. The plus side to the CZ is it carries 50% more ammo in the magazine. At the range it really doesn't much matter.

All in all, to me it's a toss up. I like them both and carry them both. I recommend adding a P-83 to your safe, because you can never have too many options or ComBloc guns. And then you'll be able to try them back to back as well.

Agreed on all points.

The grip is what put me off on the CZ-82. It just doesn't feel right. I have to agree with GR to some degree, if it doesn't do what I want it to, why buy it. While I have my toys, I really can't afford to buy stuff unless it's what I NEED, or it trips my trigger, collecting while fun to contemplate is not something I'm inclined/afford to do. It's not me just to buy, just for the sake of buying. I really don't know if I'd be a collector or not, even if I had the money. I'm not taking a shot at those that do collect though, you collect, I buy good cigars. I find that the only autos that feel natural or good in my hand are the Hi-pwr, TT33, P-64 and the new XD's. Being perfectly honest I reinstalled the stock grips on my P-64 with a 'Handall jr. for a Better fit'. It's not a recoil issue, but the backstrap on Dennis's grips are too thick. Nothing against Dennis. But, it was like having an itch you couldn't scratch. I don't remember who it was here that said it, "If you're not comfortable with a weapon, don't carry it." But I really don't know if I like or want something until I'm holding it, like the time I first picked up a Hi-Pwr. It was like oh yeah!! I've got to get one of these!! I haven't had too many moments like that, I tend to savor them.
