Tula Ammo

Received my P-64 a few days ago. I purchases both the Red Army Elite 9x18mm and Tula Ammo. At the range the Red Army Standard performed flawlessly. On the other hand the Tula ammo would not fully chamber. I was never able to get off more than two rounds and the cartridges will not eject. Went back to Red Army and again zero issues. The Tula ammo was so bad I gave it to the range. Sad it wouldn't work because it is about $5 less per box. The Tula bullets have a distinct edge on the bullet itself which prevents chambering. The rim at the base of the casing that the ejector latches onto is thicker than standard as well. Will not eject. My AK and SKS eat Tula like candy. I do not recommend Tula at all for the Polish Radom P64 platform. I have a 1977 with the Wolff 22# recoil spring and 18# hammer spring. Very accurate but hard on the web of your hand! Love it! Too bad about the Tula ammo though😥

Funny, mine eats Tula like eveything else I feed it, without a hiccup.

Yes...I don't get it. All 50 Red Army=0 issues. 1st 2 rounds of Tula=problems. Could never get it to work. Guess I'll just shoot brass. You are fortunate yours likes everything☺

Check your extractor hook and make sure it is not damaged or the hook is full of dried cosmoline or other junk. A possibility.

Since the P-64 was designed to run on commie ammo, I suspect there is another issue.

Like Ketchman said, make sure you have thoroughly cleaned all of the cosmoline from the weapon.

You may also want to polish the feed ramp. I did mine before ever taking it to the range and it seems to eat anything I feed it. I have not yet fired any hollow points because in most cases, the 9 x 18 Mak doesn't have enough energy for them to expand much on impact. I have opted to just put the deepest hole possible in my intended target and stay with round nose FMJ projectiles.

GuitarmanNick, try Hornady Critical Defense. I was very very impressed with expansion tests I did, although granted in water, but have seen them done in gel. The round always expands, period.

+1 on the Hornady Critical Defense. My home carry round of choice.

2+ on the HCD ammo. Functions flawlessly and the ballistic tests are favorable.
Last I read on Red Army was it was key holing out of a P64.
What do you guys think of Brown Bear ammo for practice?

Brown Bear is great for practice, but I like the Silver bear HP's for general use as they are very close to as cheap as the Brown bear ball and can be used as self defence if need be. I have water tested them and they will expand in water realably.

Sounds good, thx.
Silver Bear would be nice but it's $3 more a box and since I live in "that" left coast state I need to stock up on as much ammo I can before Jan 1st. The Brown Bear ammo gives me the best bang for the buck (no pun intended).
I've got several boxes of HCD for carry ammo so cheap practice ammo is what I need for now.

I've only got 3 more months (must be delivered by December 31st) and several thousand more rounds to buy of different calibers so it's penny pinching time...

I am.sorry you have to deal with The Peoples Republic of Kalifornia BS. Persomally I think I would be moving but I understand there are other forces at work there.
So yeah, Brown Bear ammo is great for practice. In fact, my bet is it is nothing more than repackaged military spec ammo off the same production lines as the stuff they send to the military.

You might want to try Academy's house brand, Monarch, for practice. It's cheap (especially on sale) and haven't had feed or firing problems with it.

If you really want a head-scratcher, most all my P64 pistols ran well on most all ammo. BUT ... I had one that had problems digesting "Silver Bear" with the shiny silvery coating yet ran 100% on "Brown Bear" which had the "polyformance" coating. You'd expect the better (IMO) finish rounds to be better but no, just the opposite.
