Rating Different Ammo Brands

Post by jed »

I have several different pistols that use the 9 x18 round, but my P-64 seems to be more picky than the others. What are some of the most reliable brands and the most unreliable for this gun?

Welcome to the forum Jed.

I have used Silver Bear in mine with no problems.

I've used Silver Bear and it worked fine - but not in ALL my P64s. No reason, just picky, I guess. Now Wolf WPA in the black box ran flawlessly in all of my pistols so I just generally use that. Hornady FTX and XTP HP brass-cased ammo seems to be fine in all and is my choice for SD ammo.

Thanks for the replies. I have used Brown Bear, Silver Bear, and Red Army with no problems in all my 9 x18 pistols except the P-64. The only brand I have used in the P-64 without issue is from the box in the picture I have attached. I don't know what brand it is. I got it a long time ago and I have yet to run across more of the same. I will try the Wolf WPA and see how it works for me.

I have run PPU FMJ and JHP through my P64, both before and after recoil spring (22lb.) upgrade with no failures at all. I have 2 boxes of GECO FMJ (Made in Hungary) that I got from AIM ($12.95 ea on sale) that I am going to try next. I only shoot brass-cased, non-bimetal ammo since many of the ranges where I live do not allow any kind of steel ammo.

I've used both Silver Bear and Monarch without any issues.

Brown Bear and Monarch, Silver Bear are all made at the Barnaul Cartridge Works plant in Russia. They all have same stamping on casings.
