Experienced opinions wanted

Post by jebbh »

Need some suggestions from those who have spent some time under the hood of the P64. I like mine but it has a flaw. After the slide has been cycled to load from the magazine, and the safety applied dropping hammer; then when the pistol is switched back to fire, the trigger has not re-engaged and takes several pulls to fire. I will install a heavier trigger spring and de-bur and stone the disconnector. This only happens when a round or snap cap is chambered. It works fine with nothing in the chamber. What else might be responsible? thanks for any help.

Update on my friend’s P64, for the second time the slide locked back immobile, galling the slide stop lever in the process. J&G said they’d replace the pistol. He said they’ve only had trouble with 3 of 1000 pistols.

Why would you need a heavier trigger spring? It has nothing to do with what you're experiencing. Try this first. Disassemble your pistol completely, check here on how to: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=4200

Clean everything completely. When I first got mine, I soaked all the parts including the frame and slide on a container with gasoline. After brushing all the parts, I used a 1000 grit sand paper and polished all the parts that come in contact with each other. The disconnector, I polished the bottom area that slides on the trigger bar, as well as the trigger bar area that's in contact with the disconnector. Check the side/corner areas of the disconnector that face's the frame side, make sure there's no burrs.
Just make sure to take your time, do not overdo any filing/sanding or grinding.

Thank you for the guidance, that is how I shall proceed. I changed the hammer spring to 20 lb to some benefit. Is the recoil spring at all relevant? (The amount of recoil is of no worry to me).

See how it works with the stock recoil spring and the 20lb hammer spring.

That will be the real test.
