New Member Question

Post by Arctic Dude »

Hello All! :D I just acquired my first P64 (1976) yesterday and I'm very excited to have it and be here. It was imported by C.A.I. Obtained the pistol with an extra mag, but no holster, and 50 rounds of Silver Bear. Well, I decide to load up the magazine with the ammo to see how it all worked. I chambered a round, dropped the hammer with the safety, and then flipped the safety to fire. Then....nothing. The trigger just pulled as though the safety was still on. Hmmmm. I also have some A-Zoom snap caps and decided to give those a try. They worked just fine...had the crazy hard trigger pull that I expected!! Anybody have any thoughts why it was a no-go with the real ammo? Also, should there be some "play" with the hammer when loaded (with the safety either off or on)?

Thanks for any words of wisdom.

So you tried it will real ammo on DA and no bang? was there any dimple/light primer strike on the ammo? Did you give it the usual thorough cleaning? It could just be gunk up with cosmo, try to spray the firing pin hole with brake cleaner. If it functioned with a snap cap, no reason why it wouldn't on live ammo.

Thanks for the replies Curly1 and gemini1. The link you provided was very helpful, Curly1. I will do a thorough disassembly, cleaning and polishing and then see what's what. Gemin1, no issues with the firing pin...the issue was that there was no proper trigger action (it was like the safety was still on). Once all checked out I will post an update. Thanks again!

With the slide off, try pushing the disconnector down. It should cause the hammer to fall. Then the disconnector should spring back up when released. If not, it may be gonked up or you trigger spring may be going bad.

Hi Weasel640...thanks for the suggestion. That doesn't seem to be the issue. When I pushed down on the disconnect it dropped the hammer and returned to position. Will still attempt the complete strip down and cleaning of everything. Have ordered Wolff springs, so waiting to do everything when the springs arrive. Also ordered some Marschal grips to spruce it up a bit. I guess will be a bit of a wait for those. Oh well, from what I've seen, well worth the wait.

Well, I've been checking things out online and am now wondering whether this may be related to the ammo I have? The Silver Bear that came with the gun is old, I guess. It's 120 grain HP from the LVE plant back in good old Novosibirsk. This is probably a Russian curse on a Polish gun!! :o After all, my father was in a Siberian labor camp that may not have been too far from the growing metropolis where the LVE plant is situated!

Hi Weasel...I've looked over the schematics of the gun and am wondering which spring is responsible for causing the disconnector to "spring back up" once released. Although mine comes back up, it's not very springy. Needs some Cialis maybe!!!

Well...it's not entirely the ammo. Got some Wolf and Hornady Critical Defence to try. The Wolf is just like the Silver Bear; with a round chambered and the safety off, the disconnector is not doing what it needs to do and the trigger pulls with no resistance (like the safety is still on). The Hornady was somewhat better. Occasionally the trigger would be engaged enough that I could fire, while at other times it was a no-go. All is cleaned and oiled. New Wolff springs installed. Got some Flitz and may try polishing some of the internals; feed ramp, disconnector...

P.S. Snap caps still working flawlessly.

All sorted now courtesy of this YouTube video...

Works like a charm now with just a wee bit of filing. :D Still not sure why everything worked with the snap caps, but got hung up with the ammo? Perhaps the snap caps are slightly smaller???

I think I'm having a similar issue. After firing a few live rounds, I would occasionally have a situation where pulling th trigger would not cause the hammer to drop, as if the safety wasn't activated OR possibly the trigger wasn't resetting? I will check if my disconnector as well as Weasel suggested. Btw, where are y'all buying the ammo for this? My local Academy only has Monarch steel and cheaperthandirt is sold out of the brown bear and silver bear 9x18.
