Question about reassembly...

Post by vistula »

It's been a while since I've used my P-64. Could someone remind me...when reassembling the pistol after cleaning, should the hammer drop when the slide goes back on?

Do you have the decocker in the "safe" position?

Yes, it's in 'safe' when I do this. I've seen youtube videos with the safety on 'fire' and the hammer then stays cocked.

If the decocker is in safe then it will engage the disconnector, which will let the hammer fall if it was cocked.

Thanks. I was concerned about dry firing, but with the disconnector engaged, it's obviously not.

Can these safely be dry fired?

IMO using snap caps is cheap insurance for dry firing.

I use them on all my calibers.

I've never actually used snap caps, but it seems like a good idea. I assume they're reusable?

I just use spent non reloadable spent casings as my snap cap, I use it for several times before tossing. If you reload, you make a dummy round, use pencil eraser head cut to size and fill up the primer hole. Usually last me one night of dry firing practice.

If you simply make up a dummy round and plug the primer hole with silicone sealant (and let it cure) then you have an almost indestructible snap cap. DaveN
