p64 safety/decocker question

Post by texasfish »

just joined the forum so I hope this question is not old news. I just inherited a 1974 p64 that looks to be in new condition. I have been a ruger revolver guy all of my life. this little p64 feels great in my hands and am going to take it to the range later this week. my question is the safety/decocker a 3 stage mechanism? after I rack the slide to chamber a round (snap cap) I can push the safety halfway down and the red dot will still be showing but the trigger has been disabled and then I depress the safety all the way down covering the red dot completely and the decocker will engage. is this normal for the p64? thanks

texasfish, welcome to the forum. If I understand your question correctly, no, it has two positions, on and off. When the decocker is in the down/safe position the trigger should be disabled, the firing pin locked, and the hammer blocked, when it's up (red dot showing) it's showtime. Break it down, lay it on the table right side facing up, and look for obviously missing or broken/misaligned parts. Download the parts manual from this site for your guide. Also, be sure it is meticulously clean inside. Not a lot of heavy grease buildup and powder residue in there. Remember these are blow back pistols, and by their nature they get a lot of .... well .... blow back each time they are fired. If a positive inspection and/or a good cleaning doesn't fix it get it to a qualified gunsmith. These little pistols are fine pieces of engineering and craftsmanship but they do occasionally break and a broken firearm is a dangerous thing on both ends of the barrel. Hope that helps and again, welcome.

PS: texasfish,
After the second cup of coffee  I reread your question and my answer, and while technically correct, it was somewhat misleading. If by the decocker "engaging" you mean that it drops the hammer and the trigger is still disconnected, then it is functioning correctly. Somehow in the morning fog (yes noon is morning for me 8) ) I took away from your question that when you put your weapon fully on safe the trigger reengaged. (don't know, senility I suppose) As you go from fire to safe the safety/decocker first disconnects the trigger then it locks the firing pin, and as that shaft continues to roll over it blocks the hammer. The last thing to happen is the hammer dropping. Makes sense if you think about it I guess but sometimes it takes a few cups of coffee before I make any sense. Sorry if I confused you and stay safe.
Shoot first, Shoot straight, and hit what you're aiming at, if you can do these things and have six rounds of ammo, you'll have two thirds more than you need to prevail.

yes when I start to engage (drop the safety) about halfway down the trigger is blocked but the red dot is still showing and if I depress it all the way down it decocks and drops the hammer with no red dot showing. was wondering if this is normal to these guns? and thanks for the reply it appears there is a wealth of info on this site.

Welcome to the forum.

If you remove your slide and use the safety you can see it in action blocking the firing pin as the hammer drops.

Post up some pics we like P64 porn :)

CURLY1, thanks I see what you are saying. I will post some pictures tonight when I get home. hope to take it to the range as I found a local gun store here in texas that has some s&b fmj range ammo for $14 a box. also saw a pachmayr model #3 grip sleeve and a Hogue handall and handall jr at the same store which I thought might feel better than the hard plastic grips but was not sure which one would fit better so I will do some research on that as well. again thanks
