You might want to try Academy's house brand, Monarch, for practice. It's cheap (especially on sale) and haven't had feed or firing problems with it.

I would not advise soaking in pain thinner or any solution for 24 hours. Really soaking at all. If you are wanting to clean and decrease, there are specific products that can do this or you could use a non-chlorinated brake fluid. I may be accused of wanting to have my cake and eat it too, but... Have you considered adding cushioning to the rear of your grip to absorb some of the shock? I would think that would combine the best of both worlds. Just a thought.

+3 on the corrosion and pitting. It may be the cause of the firing pin problem too. A liberal dose of WD-40 and some elbow grease will help end that, IMO.

I haven't had a jam since I went to loading five rounds in the magazine. YMMV.
